The Social Work Profession
The social work profession is committed to maximising the wellbeing of individuals, families, groups, communities and society. Social Workers are highly educated, university qualified practitioners. We follow strict ethics and standards and are accredited with the Australia Association of Social Workers.
We consider that individual and societal wellbeing is underpinned by socially inclusive communities that emphasise principles of social justice and respect for human dignity and human rights. Drawing on theories of social work, social sciences, humanities and Indigenous knowledges, social workers focus on the interface between the individual and the environment and recognise the impact of social, political, economic and cultural factors on the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities.
Accordingly, social workers maintain a dual focus in both assisting with and improving human wellbeing; and addressing any external and structural issues that may be negatively affecting it, such as inequality, injustice and discrimination (AASW).

BA, GradDipEd, GradCertTESOL,
Welcome to Awen Counselling & Advocacy. My name is Amanda Hicks and I am an Accredited Social Worker, Educator, Lecturer and Advocate. My passion is in working with children and adolescents who are experiencing the challenges of life, be it due to learning difficulties, trauma, anxiety or behaviour. As an extension, I am passionate about family relationships and supporting women through pregnancy and motherhood.
Central to the work I conduct with children and adolescents is the relationship within the family unit. I therefore offer family support and adult support across areas such as anxiety, marriage counselling, attachment and relationships.
Having worked for over 26 years in numerous roles where I have supported 10,000 + young people I continue to admire the strength and openness of those I care for.
My approach to counselling as a Social Worker is built on relationships. For me, the relationship I build with those I care for is central to offering hope and recovery.
I love to study and have completed 6 university degrees, including a Master of Social Work, 5 university degrees in education and I have recently started my 7th degree, a Master of Mental Health.
Over 26 years in Education in Primary, Secondary and Tertiary settings.
